Falling trees, damage to parked vehicles and infrastructure, cancellations of flights at the airport and power supply problems are caused by the gale-force winds – with an intensity of 7 to 8 Beaufort – blowing in Thessaloniki since the morning, with gusts of wind reaching 106 km. /time.

So far the Fire Service has received 150 calls in the wider area of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki, while it intervened in 82 cases for cutting down trees and in 19 for removing objects.

In many areas of the urban complex, damage was recorded to parked cars due to falling trees and branches that in some cases even “closed” roads. The strong winds caused a canopy to bend at a gas station in western Thessaloniki, while so far four flights to the international airport “Macedonia” have not taken place – two from Athens were canceled and two others (from Malta and Milan, respectively) landed at another airport.

With the strong gusts of wind and the waves… the historic destroyer “Arrow” also faces off which is anchored in Nea Paralia of Thessaloniki and functions as a floating museum. The Coast Guard tug boat sailed to the spot in order to stabilize the “Arrow”.

Isolated power supply problems are recorded in areas of the municipality of Thermi, east of Thessaloniki, due to falling trees and other objects. PPC workshops are on site to fix the problems.

In addition to the stormy winds, the drop in temperature compared to the previous 24 hours is noticeable, as the mercury in Thessaloniki did not exceed 12 degrees Celsius.

The same time, the first snows fell in the mountains of Western Macedonia, such as in Nymphaeum and Pisoderi in Florina, but also Vasilitsa Grevena.
