A 52-year-old man in Kato Achaia had a “carter” while hunting, yesterday at noon, near the railway line, a few meters before the bridge of the river Peiros. The 52-year-old man was fatally injured when he was hit by a passing Suburban train, running the route Patra-K. Achaia and hurled himself into the river.

According to secure information from “Peloponnisos”, the train driver who was arrested in the context of the car accident, reportedly testified to the police that while the train was moving on the tracks, the man suddenly appeared from the reeds, without however being able to react. As a result, the train hit with force and injured the 52-year-old, who then ended up in the waters of Peiros, while the train came to a standstill.

Police officers from the Western Achaia Police Department and an 8-member squad from the 6th EMAK of Patras rushed to the scene. In order to search for the man, an operation was set up, with the rescuers “diving” into the river, wearing a diving suit, where they located and retrieved the unconscious 52-year-old from the bed.

His hunting rifle was also found at the scene. It is assumed that his death was instantaneous when he was hit by the train. According to eyewitnesses, he had serious injuries to his head, which had altered his facial features. The body was transported by EKAV ambulance to the mortuary at the University General Hospital of Patras for a necropsy.

The train driver, in a state of shock, was arrested, submitted to a breathalyzer and after his statement, was released. A case of manslaughter was filed for the train accident. Sources told “P” that this is an experienced executive, who has been working in the Patras Suburban for the last 5 years.

After the tragic event, according to Hellenic Train, there was a stoppage of traffic on the Agios Andreas-Kato Achaia section and the routes were operated by buses.
