Asked what consumers should do who don’t know which tariff to choose, Mr. Skylakakis suggested that they stay with green, which is very competitive, and choose after the prices are announced by their providers
“I am optimistic about the reform which in the first phase brought competition» said the Minister of Environment and Energy Theodoros Skylakakis regarding the new electricity tariffs, speaking on the SKAI broadcast, TODAY.
“Green will be the cheapest as its price will be below 14 euro cents without subsidies and is the tariff passed on to all consumers who will not choose a color. The RAAEF will announce its price on January 2, but we think it will evolve under 14 minutes» explained the Mr. Skylakakis.
Regarding the other colors of the tariff, the Minister of Energy stated that “blue tariffs are very competitive under 15 minutes per kilowatt hour while it is about the fixed tariff”.
“Green is a floating tariff that the consumer will know the price on the first day of the month, blue is a fixed tariff whose price will be valid for six months or one year from the beginning of the contract. Finally the yellow one if it is floating after the fact you know the price after the end of the month but you don’t pay the hedging risk”.
At the same time, Mr. Skylakakis stated that “we want the competition to work in all colors”.
Asked about it what should consumers do who do not know which tariff to choose, Mr. Skylakakis suggested to stay on green which is very competitive.
“They should wait for the first of the month when the invoice with the prices from the providers will come out and if they see that their provider is expensive to change then” he said.
Regarding the electricity subsidy the Minister of Energy emphasized that at the moment there are subsidies for 40% of the population such as the social tariff or that of those with many children, while in the first quarter of 2024 those who heat with electricity and enter the platform will see prices at the pre-crisis level. He clarified that the specific subsidies apply to all tariffs.
Asked for consumers not understanding the new tariffs, Mr. Skylakakis replied that “before we had 130 different invoices and the consumer didn’t track them. Now we’re grouping them into four categories and educating people until they understand the new system so they can compare prices.”
“Competition is already working, as in blue and we will see it in green and yellow as well. Competition is here to stay. However, this is a part of the electricity bill that shapes its price, while there are others such as that of pollutants that have increased in price from 20-25 euros to 75, there is the price of gas that has been reduced, it has the price of lignite which is the most expensive fuel, has the electricity thefts but also the strategic defaulters” he added.
Regarding the adjustment clause, he said that the accuracy is due to the war in Ukraine and the increase in the price of pollutants and as they enter the GDPs decrease
“In order to have cheap electricity, we need to install renewable sources, make electrical interconnections on the islands and reduce the electricity thefts for which controls are carried out. We caught 13,000 rheumatic thefts a year and to deal with them we go to counting per month and increasing the penalties.”
