The AUTH research team notes that “since 8/12 a systematic upward trend of the viral load of Sars-CoV-2 in the wastewater of Thessaloniki has been observed”
Wide spread of SARS-CoV-2 in her community Thessaloniki and a parallel increase in the viral load of the flu, document the measurements of the last weeks in the city’s municipal waste, in the research conducted by the Wastewater Epidemiology Group of AUTH with EYATH, in collaboration with the Region of Central Macedonia and in the context of National Network of EODY.
As can be seen in the charts presented by APE-MPE (attached), the average weekly price of cargo – from Thursday 21/12 to Wednesday 27/12 – showed a 45% increase compared to the average price of the previous week (4/ 12 -20/12). This increase added to the already high level of load in recent weeks.
His research team AUTH notes that “since 8/12 there has been a systematic increase in the viral load of Sars-CoV-2 in the wastewater of Thessaloniki”, while “between 22/12 – 27/12 the new significant increase in the viral load of Sars-CoV-2 indicates a wide spread in the community, the incidence of which is estimated at over 300 admissions per week to the city’s hospitals.’
Compared to the corresponding period last year Wastewater Epidemiology Group of the AUTH concludes, based on the data, that “the current wave of spread of the virus that we are going through is greater than the corresponding one a year ago and is due to the reduction of immunity, combined with the appearance of new sub-variants of the virus, which escape the already established immunity in the community’.
In this context, the researchers point out that “as the possibility of infection increases, it is important that high-risk groups take self-protection measures and get vaccinated”.
Additionally, as part of its surveillance influenza A, carried out by the Wastewater Epidemiology Group of AUTH, a parallel increase in the viral load of influenza was also detected from 10/12 onwards.
“Wastewater epidemiology has emerged as an important tool for epidemiological surveillance of diseases. The long-term measurements of the viral load in the wastewater of Thessaloniki indicate that it is a city representative of the dispersion as well as its impact throughout the country”, concludes the AUTH Team in its comment.
