The theft was detected last Sunday, January 28, by the priest, Fr. Anastasios who ministers in the community of Neochorio Sintiki.
The steps, the two doors of the Beautiful Gate that lead to the Holy Altar, were removed by unknown persons from the old church of Saints Georgios and Athanasios at the foot of Mount Beles.
The theft was detected last Sunday, January 28, by the priest, Fr. Anastasios who ministers in the community of Neochorio Sintiki.
The chapel is visited by the priests of the community at regular intervals to take care of it, it remains open for excursionists to visit as it is close to a path for forest walkers and hunters.
This chapel was built in 1874.
It is one of a total of four small churches located on the mountain that served the old village of Filyra.
The other three are later. As he told the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, father Anastasios had visited the church in early December.
“In the winter we don’t come that often. More often in the summer,” said the priest.
The Metropolitan of Sidirokastro Makarios was also informed about the theft.
The front doors that were stolen were made of solid wood, however their value has not been determined.
Father Anastasios’ assessment is that this is a project of great value, both financially and culturally.
Regarding the theft, the community of Neochorio Sintiki posted a notice on social media asking anyone who has any information or knows what has happened to contact either Father Anastasios or the Police.
The necessary legal procedures have already been initiated for the incident.
