The long night of the farmers in Syntagma Square was preceded by a long-hour journey with them declaring that they would not budge, asking for the satisfaction of their demands for further support of the agricultural sector from the government.
Message sent by thousands of farmers and the hundreds of tractors that overwhelmed the Syntagma in a grand and unprecedented panagrarian rally.
After a long journey, the farmers from all the blocs gave strength “present” in the capital with the absolute support of the citizens.
In the morning, they made their way back and in the local assemblies they will decide the next steps of their mobilisations.
It preceded the great night of the farmers in Syntagma Square a long-hour journey with them declaring that they are adamant in demanding the satisfaction of their demands for further support of the agricultural sector by the government.
The farmers arrived at the Constitution perfectly organized to demonstrate and claim better days for their profession.
At one in the morning the horns from the farmers’ tractors continued to sound at the Syntagma.
Yes, yes some started their engines and circled the square as a sign of protest.
“We want to show that we didn’t come here to sleep and play, we came here with a purpose”said a typical farmer.
Producers from all parts of the country lined up with their tractors outside the Parliamentprepared to spend the night there.
They came to Athens determined to spend the whole night on the road and for this reason they procured the essentials, food and water up to sleeping bags and blankets.
“We will stay here all night outside the Parliament, we have come from Chalkida, the children have come together, we will sit as long as necessary. We’ve got basic necessities, some water, some toast.”declared late from Evia stressing that they were not going to sleep.
The Athenians not only welcomed the farmers with applause, they also took them food to spend the night in the Syntagma.
At four in the morning the tractors remained parked in the square of the capital. Some stayed up all night while others slept on their tractors.
“Coordinated, determined because the problems are very big, very serious and we will not retreat because we have reached the bottom and it is now a matter of survival”one of them pointed out.
The truly magnificent and historic rally of the farmers has come to an end but problems for young and older farmers remain.
Returning to the field they will again see the cost of production.
“I am very worried about my future, they want to drive me out of the villages we love so much, they will not succeed. We are taking to the streets, we will not leave the roadblocks until our demands are met” and “We believe we have given a great message to the government that it does not weaken us but strengthens us because our problems are too big“, are some of their statements.
After the mass mobilization here in Athens the peasants return to the blockades again.
From tomorrow, general assemblies will be held in order to redefine their position.
They do not rule out further escalation of the mobilizations while at the table, at the level of Peloponnese and western Greecea new rally has also taken place in Athens.
“The fight goes on anyway. The fight doesn’t stop. Either with the blockades or with the mobilizations or with this magnificent mobilization that we had here in Athens.“, they summarize.
“There was indeed a grand rally yesterday, it was a historic day for the entire agricultural movement, for the farmers, the breeders, the beekeepers”, underlined Sokratis Aleiftiras, Expr. Type Om. Agr. Associations of N. Larisa.
Organized and with absolute discipline, the tractors started for the return journeyhaving sent a resounding message with their rally.
