Event at 7pm, at the French Institute, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of her death
Thirty years have passed today, March 6, since the death of Melina Merkourisand the French Institute honors her memory by organizing an event entitled “Melina Mercouri: 30 Years in Eternity”.
The event will take place at 19:00, offering the public an imaginary journey into her life and work through a discussion between Spyros Arsenis and Giorgos Archimandrites, authors of the book “Melina. A star in America” (“Pataki” Publications) and Yiannis Zoumboulakis, journalist and film critic.
According to the announcement, the evening “will feature an extraordinary selection of anecdotal audio-visual documents and testimonials, both featuring her and personalities who knew and worked with her. These documents will highlight the unique path of the “last Greek Goddess” who left her indelible mark on the international cultural scene”.
“She was an open person, she didn’t hide anything,” Vassilis Diamantopoulos described Melina Merkouri. Actress and politician with anti-dictatorship activity, Melina Merkouri (1920-1994) was the longest-serving Minister of Culture in Greece, in the years 1981-89 and 1993-94, in all PASOK governments. From the position he was in, a campaign was launched for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures stolen by Lord Elgin.
Among other things, he created the institution of the Municipal Regional Theaters (DI.PE.THE.) with the aim of the cultural development of the Greek region and also the institution of the cultural capitals of Europe, with Athens being the first in 1985. He emphasized the restoration of the monuments of Acropolis, as well as highlighting our cultural heritage.
She had been honored (1960) with the award for best female performance in the film “Never Sunday” at the Cannes Film Festival.
