The male orca nicknamed Starboard was caught on video killing a 2.4m great white shark and removing its liver
The moment an orca, the killer whale, attacks, kills and eats a great white shark in just two minutes, was recorded by tourists on a ship off the coast of South Africa, outside the port of Mosel Bay.
According to the Daily Mail, the male orca nicknamed Starboard was caught on video killing a 2.4m adolescent great white shark and removing its nutrient-rich liver.
The whale then passed in front of the boat, with the shark’s bloody liver still in its mouth.
It is the first time that an orca’s lone attack on its prey has been captured on camera, as killer whales usually hunt in pairs.
“The analysis of the shots surprised us. We didn’t know she was able to grab this type of shark on her own and in such a quick time frame. It just shows how capable she is – a super predator,” Alison Towner, head of an international research team that analyzed the footage captured by tourists, told the Daily Mail.
