More than 500 seabirds have been found dead since the start of the year along France’s western coast, exhausted by unusually heavy winter storms that prevent them from feeding, the French Union for the Protection of Birds (LPO) says.

Antoine Prevel, a volunteer with the non-profit organization Sea Shepherd, noted that several seabirds are found dead on the French coast at the end of each winter, but not on such a large scale.

Scientists estimate that the seabirds died of exhaustion due to the bad weather conditions. “Climate change is the root cause, as it increases the frequency and intensity of storms, especially winter storms,” explained Jerome Fort of France’s National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS).

Microplastic poisoning and chemical contamination can also deplete seabirds, which are foraging ever closer to shore due to climate change and overfishing, Fort added.
