For the first time, a pilot surgery was performed at the Mytilini Hospital under general anesthesia on a Person with Special Needs, specifically on a 19-year-old on the autism spectrum. The surgery aimed at the total restoration of oral cavity diseases in one session, based on a treatment plan that included extractions, fillings, gingivitis treatment and fluoridation and which was established in a previous clinical and radiographic examination.

“The above” says the President of the Mytilini Hospital, Giorgos Kambouris “is the result of the successful completion of a multi-month effort that began with communication and a first record of the needs of the disabled people and associations of Lesvos, it continued with the equipment of the operating room with a wheelchair that enriched the possibilities beyond the others for dental surgery treatments (occlusions), but also for periodontal diseases”.

It should be noted here that important stations on the way to the implementation of such a surgery outside of Athens were also the visit-training at the “Asklipieio” Hospital of Voula, which is considered the center of reference in the country in terms of the specific types of treatments, but also the participation of the joint team of the Dental and Anesthesiology departments of the Mytilini Hospital in the Panhellenic Congress of Hospital Dentistry and Dental Special Care.

The team of the Dental Department consisted of Aikaterini Hatzilia (Director), Stergios Tsifi (Assistant Doctor) and Andriani Pappa (Nurse). The team of the Anesthesiology Department included Loukia Makra (Director), Konstantina Sgourou (Editor 1) and Antonia Georgakelli (Nurse).

“Our goal” points out the President of the Mytilini Hospital “is to establish regular monthly surgeries under general anesthesia, which will serve lists of people with disabilities over 16 years of age, in order to satisfy the constant request to cover the needs of these sensitive fellow human beings in our Hospital , without requiring travel to hospitals in Athens”.
