Universal support against of the installation wind turbines at Sfakia in the prefecture of Chania was highlighted during the enlarged meeting of the Municipal Council of Sfakia on the topic “Planned installation of wind turbines and a network of high voltage pylons in the areas of the Municipality of Sfakia”.

In the presence of a large number of people, organizations, as well as representatives of headquarters services, Mr mayor of Sfakion, Ioannis Zervos spoke about the negative consequences of the project on the natural environment and on the society of Sfakion, due to the side effects which will come, as he pointed out, in the primary sector, but also in tourism, which is growing dynamically in the region.

The plan as submitted to the Ministry of the Interior envisages the construction 6 Wind Power Plants (ASPIE) in four municipalities of the prefecture of Chania with a power of 288 MW and a maximum output power of 256.36 MW.

The wind farms will operate in the municipalities Sfakion, Apokoronou, Kissamos and Kandanos Selinos.

The extended meeting was held to inform the residents in detail about the plans for the installation of wind turbines.

At the same time, there was an update with presentation and mentioned data regarding the technical description of the project by the special partner of the mayor of Sfakia, Stavros Kapridakis, electrical engineer-engineer, and Sofia Lykou, political engineer, vice-president of the TEE of Western Crete.

This was followed by statements from the head of the opposition Eleftherios Kopasis, the deputy regional governor of Chania Nikolaos Kalogeri, the mayor of Apokoronos Charalambos Koukianakis, the mayor of Kissamos Georgios Mylonakis, the representative of Kantanou-Selinou vice-mayor Antonio Kastrinakis, the former MP of the KKE of Chania and regional councilor Alexandros Marinakis, the president of the Union of Sfakians of the Prefecture of Chania Andreas Manouselis, the president of the Federation of Cattle Breeders of the Prefecture of Chania Manousos Stavrgianoudakis, the University professor Aris Moustakas, as well as from the residents of the area.
