The eclipse will be visible to residents from the Pacific coast of Mexico to the Atlantic coast of Canada
The 2024 total solar eclipse, which will take place on April 8, will plunge parts of Mexico, the United States and Canada into darkness as the day looks like dawn or dusk.
In southern Illinois, about 200,000 people are expected to flood those locations from which the Great American Eclipse will be visible. The same will apply to residents from the Pacific coast of Mexico to the Atlantic coast of Canada.
The sky will darken for 4 minutes and 9 seconds, almost twice as long as the previous eclipse.
The spectacular astronomical phenomenon will also be visible in some major US urban areas, such as Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo.
Observers closer to the center of the path will experience the longest duration of totality, and the duration of this window decreases closer to the edge of the path.
NASA’s WB-57 research aircraft will fly at high altitude during the eclipse to study the corona, hoping to capture new details about its structure in different wavelengths of light.
“The reason we fly in airplanes, apart from the fact that it’s very cool, is because going up in the atmosphere gives you access to wavelengths of light that you can’t get from the ground,” said Dr Amir Caspi from the Southwest Research Institute.
