The process of rescuing two whales (Ziphius cavirostris), which erupted this morning in the shallows of two west coasts of Corfu, was successfully completed, as announced by RIS. The first zebra reportedly erupted off the coast of Arillas, northwest of Corfu and was soon driven deep into the deep with the help of volunteer rescuers and locals who located the marine mammal, while efforts focused on the second beak, which of the coast of Agios Gordios, on the southwest side of the island.

With the mobilization of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, specialized veterinarians of the Hellenic Center for Marine Mammal Rescue and Care “Arion” rushed to the spot, who examined the animals and took blood samples to follow the analysis of the samples by the veterinarians of the laboratory.

After many hours of effort, the veterinarians under the guidance of the professor of Veterinary Medicine at AUTh, Anastasia Komninou, with the help of local divers and volunteers, managed to free the second zifi, which returned to the deep waters.

In addition, the Corfu Port Authority was called to increased vigilance and intensive patrols in the area for timely detection in case of re-docking of the two mammals or docking of others on the coast of the island, while at the same time, as it became known, the Ministry of Environment and Energy contacted the Director Institute of Marine Protection “Archipelagos”, Anastasia Miliou for providing specialized advice.
