The “Disease of the Divers” is due to the bumps of the bugs – Why they are indicators of noise pollution

by

The massive flooding of bugs on the shores of Corfu brought many reasonable questions, with the main reason being that these animals were found on the shores. The scientific manager of the ARION Cetacean Rescue and Care Research Center, Emilia Drouga, explains through GRTimes.gr the operation that took place in Corfu, the causes of the landslides, while analyzing the case of the gif in Alimos who lost his life and stresses actions they must take in the event of such an incident.

“There were three rescues in Corfu. These animals, due to research boats and warships, rise to the surface to breathe, because they are disoriented by loud sounds. The same thing happens with divers, also known as “diver disease”. They actually get embolism of the eardrum, so something similar happens to the typhus. “During the sounds, they are anxious, as a result of which they become dizzy and run aground”, Ms. Drouga emphasizes.

In addition, the Greek moat that starts approximately from South Corfu and extends to Crete needs vigilance according to the co-founder of ARION. “These animals are not known because they swim 4,000 meters below the sea and feed mainly on squid. “In three days, three zebras came out on the coast of Corfu, while we do not know how many were lost in the deep. “They are animals that do not appear on the surface of the sea and do not approach humans.”

Emilia Drouga adds that she is quite cautious about the outcome of the investigations, but according to a new information they received from Greenpeace, the research work has been stopped for the time being. “The indications are that more will be found in the near future, especially as the research exercises continue.”

Ziphoi: Marine noise pollution indicators

“A sound in Corfu can be heard as far as Crete, because we are talking about low frequency sound. Personally, I call them indicators of marine noise pollution, because where they are found, there are usually noise disturbances from human interventions in a marine area “, according to the scientific director of ARION.

Such massive landslides took place in 1997 and 1998 in the Ionian Sea and in the South of Crete. “In ’97 and ’98, NATO allied exercises were taking place in the region and 14 groundings had been recorded for the first time in the country,” recalls Emilia Drouga.

In addition, research conducted with hydrophones and sonar – which emit loud sounds – aims to find exactly where to find useful materials, such as oil or hydrocarbons. When a deposit is found, they increase the volume of their work and create a problem in the hearing system of these animals.

“We can not attribute these clogs 100% to the research work, because examinations should be performed only on dead animals and if we take their ‘ears’, which are deep inside their brain,” adds the co-founder of ARION.

The case of the bell in Alimos

Regarding the zifio in Alimos, the scientific manager of ARION explains to GRTimes.gr why it is not the same case as those in Corfu.

“In Alimos, the gizmo was sick. He had been eating for a long time, his immune system was strained and he had severe arteritis. Therefore, it had nothing to do with the incident that took place in the Ionian. However, the end of the animal in this way may have come from anthropological interventions, from climate change (eg increase in temperature) or by consuming inappropriate food, resulting in some parasites giving birth to diseases in their body.

Finally, the ARION Cetacean Rescue and Care Research Center begs the citizens who go for a walk on the shore, if they see an animal stranded and that they need help, to call the Coast Guard or the Research Center and from there the guidelines will be given. of. “People need to be informed and begin to understand that basic protocols must be followed so that these animals are not disturbed. However, they escape and are not observed many times, as with the sound that becomes more intense “, adds Ms. Drouga.
