A 27-year-old employee of the external guard of the prisons of Agia Chania was arrested, when it was found that he tried to introduce mobile phones into the prison, leaving them in a place where criminal prisoners would pick them up.

The 27-year-old was taken to the Investigator and then to the Prosecutor, who issued an order late in the afternoon and was released until the trial of the case.

Speaking to APE – MPE, Panagiotis Stafylarakis, president of the Union of External Guards of Detention Shops, said: “This is a case that angered, disappointed and saddened us. This person has been in the Foreign Guard for the last seven months. Before serving as an internal correctional officer. As a service we have not given rights and we feel on the one hand uncomfortable with what happened and on the other hand lucky that we found him and he was brought to justice.” Mr. Stafylarakis said that such actions are very dangerous for his colleagues, because during the transport of prisoners either to a court or to a hospital carried out by the servicemen in the Foreign Guard, a sworn guard may create a problem for his colleagues or even to prisoners.

In fact, in a statement issued by the Union, it is stated: “This is the first and we want to believe the last case where a “colleague” betrays the trust of his colleagues and the law, and as the Union of External Guard Employees of Detention Centers of Chania we want his exemplary punishment for the violation of the mission assigned to him by the State and for tarnishing the honor and reputation of our comrades and our service”.
