Today, Wednesday, June 5, according to the calendar, the memory of Saint Dorotheus the hieromartyr, Saint Plutarch the martyr, and the ten Holy Martyrs of Egypt is commemorated.

The names celebrated today are: Dorothea, Dorotheos, Plutarch, Cynthia, Cynthia, Apollo, Apollon, Nikandria, Niki, Nikandros, Selenias, Selinos, Selenios, Seleniada, Selenia, Selini, Selina.

Holy Ten Martyrs in Egypt

All together they were a group of Christians, who knew not only how to believe, but also how to suffer willingly and happily for Christ. They were denounced to the pagan prefect of Alexandria, and boldly confessed their faith. In vain he hoped that he could at least intimidate the women, and persuade them to offer sacrifice to the idols.

Promises and threats were crushed in front of the steadfastness of women’s faith and it was quickly learned that the cross can highlight women braver than men. Then the prefect ordered that they should all be killed by hunger and thirst.

For days they remained fasting and naked, exposed to the cold winter. Defiantly, the soldiers drank and ate the best food in front of them. But they, with fervent and unceasing prayer and supplication to Christ, faced the horrible and superhuman ordeal. Finally, men and women died unshaken in their faith, chanting the name of Jesus Christ.
