PPC, in an announcement on the occasion of World Environment Day, noted that the shift to RES is at the core of the Group’s strategy
The PPC Group’s three-year business plan for the period 2024-2026 includes investments of 9 billion euros, mainly in green forms of energy and the upgrading of distribution networks, both in Greece and in Southeast Europe.
In the same period, PPC Group has set the goal of doubling the installed RES capacity to 8.9 GW, with RES representing 68% of the company’s total capacity.
At the same time, the total installed capacity of the PPC Group will increase to 13.1 GW, despite the withdrawal of lignite (by 2026 the production of energy from lignite will be zero), natural gas and oil units with a capacity of 2.8 GW. With these investments, PPC aims to reduce direct CO2 emissions by 75% by 2026, compared to 2019, making energy production greener.
This is what PPC points out in an announcement on the occasion of World Environment Day, noting that the shift to RES is at the core of the Group’s strategy “with the aim of becoming a leading clean energy company in South-Eastern Europe”.
PPC recalls the main achievements in the field of green transition, underlining, among other things, that:
- It reduced direct CO2 emissions from lignite production units by 74% from 16.9 million tons in 2019 to 4.4 million tons in 2023. Lignite production was further reduced by 27% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to corresponding period for 2023.
- It increased by 39% the production of energy from Renewable Sources compared to 2019, while at the same time it recorded an increase in the total installed RES capacity by 1.3GW, from 3.3GW in 2019 to 4.6GW in 2023.
- Completed the acquisition of the activities of Enel Romania, a key player in the Romanian energy market with a total installed capacity of 600 MW from RES alone and with an additional 5 GW of RES in the pipeline. PPC Romania, as the company’s new name is now, owns wind farms in the areas with the best wind potential in the country as well as state-of-the-art solar farms.
- Undertook the financing and implementation of anti-flood interventions of the burned areas in areas of Parnitha, an investment of Euro 2.5 million.
- It contributes to the acceleration of electrification in the country with the PPC blue brand, fully responding to its commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection. The network of PPC blue public chargers has exceeded 2200 charging points nationwide where the energy comes from RES.
- It respects its environmental commitments and cooperates with Non-Profit Organizations, participating in a series of actions aimed at protecting the environment and reducing pollution. #projectposeidon is the latest partnership between PPC Group and Enaleia to clean the burdened area around Sounio and Lavrio of plastic and abandoned fishing nets, during which more than 25,000 kg of waste was collected, mainly from the seabed .
- It continues to invest and offer green energy products and services to its customers, such as the GreenPass service that guarantees that as much energy as they consume in their home, that much is produced and captured for them by Renewable Sources. In addition, it offers the PPC myenergy Solar solutions for photovoltaics at home and PPC myEnergy HeatPump, the most efficient and economical heating system with heat pumps.
- Finally, it contributes with a series of actions to the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals
