With seven new services, the National Register of Companion Animals, the pet.gov.gr expanding digital possibilities for pet owners and managers, veterinarians, breeders, animal welfare associations, shelters and municipalities.

The services were put into production as part of the cooperation of the Ministers of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou and Interior, Theodori Livaniou with the aim of an integrated and open to all digital management system of the life events concerning companion animals, stray or not, to promote their responsible ownership, control their health and well-being and facilitate the work of veterinarians and the agencies involved.

The platform enhances the monitoring and protection of companion animals with services related to the adoption of stray animals throughout the country, controlled breeding and better management of domesticated companion animals, while it now also enables digital assistance in searching for and finding lost animals companionship.

More specifically, the following services are now available at the National Pet Registry either directly at pet.gov.gr or at gov.gr in the “Citizen and everyday life” category:

  1. Panhellenic Platform for the Adoption of Stray Animals. It includes all pets, dogs and cats that are up for adoption with detailed information, photo and contact information of the manager. It simplifies and speeds up the adoption process in Greece and abroad and ensures the legality of administrative procedures by ensuring transparency for Municipalities, animal welfare associations and organizations and shelters.
  2. Breeder registry for professional and amateur breeders. Another Registry that brings together, under specific criteria, the country’s professional and amateur pet breeders. Through the platform, the application for registration is submitted and information is gathered regarding the reproduction, the offspring of the farmed animals, as well as the traceability of their ownership.
  3. Digital Pet Breeding License Application Service. With current legislation stipulating that each pet (female or male) can only have offspring once in its lifetime, the owner’s respective Municipality of residence is the competent body to receive the application and digitally provide the necessary permit.
  4. Digital Application Service for Surrendering a Pet to the Municipality and Digital Service for Surrendering a Pet to a Charity, Association or Shelter. In case the owner is no longer able to take care of his animal, he acquires the possibility to hand it over to the Municipality of his permanent residence following the institutional procedures. In the event of exceptional health reasons or in the event of the death of the owner, it is possible through the digital application to deliver the companion animal to an animal welfare association or shelter and then post it for adoption on the digital adoption platform.
  5. Digital Pet Veterinary File Viewing Service. It includes every action (mandatory or optional) entered into the National Pet Registry for the pet, so that owners and their managers can access the full history of their pet.
  6. Digital Platform for Lost and Found Pets and Digital Service for Reporting a Possible Found of a Pet. It aims to facilitate the tracing of animals that have been reported lost. Citizens who find a lost animal can use the digital service to inform the owner.
  7. Digital Pet Death Notification Service. With the aim of facilitating the owners of companion animals, it is now possible to declare the death of their animal through a responsible declaration in the National Registry of Companion Animals. For the definitive registration of death, the certified veterinarian remains solely responsible.

The new digital functions of the project were implemented by the General Secretariat of Information Systems and Digital Governance of the Ministry of Digital Governance with the assistance of the Special Secretariat for the Protection of Companion Animals of the Ministry of the Interior.

The National Pet Registry in numbers

Registrations

  • 1,224,519 pets owned by 657,125 owners
  • 279,805 stray animals
  • 2,476 veterinarians are users of the system.

Since the start of its production operation, in December 2023, the following have taken place:

  • 88,307 new animal registrations
  • 36,680 new owner listings
  • 123,449 registrations of animal sterilizations of which 28,443 related to sterilizations of stray animals
  • 311,736 vaccination records
  • 55,775 antiparasitic drug registrations
  • 9,575 registrations of transfer of ownership
  • 8,206 adoption registrations
  • 1,397 underwriting listings
  • 246 applications of animal welfare associations and organizations have been submitted for registration in the respective Register and 173 of them have been approved.
  • 45 asylum applications have been submitted for registration in the respective Register and 19 of them have been approved.
