It should be mentioned that in the same area last year 4 other dead dolphins were found which had been killed in a similar way.
Another case of deliberate killing dolphin found in the previous days by the Institute of Marine Protection Archipelagos on its NW coast Samos.
In this particular area where significant populations of 4 species of dolphins live, while strong sea currents also end up, it is not rare to find dead marine mammals – incidents which are not usually publicized by the Institute.
But in this particular incident, the bottlenose dolphin had been amputated at the tail with a sharp object.
The violent killing of a healthy dolphin that is left to die a slow and painful death by bleeding to the surface of the sea as it struggles to breathe, can no longer be tolerated in this day and age.
It should be mentioned that in the same area last year, at the end of spring, the Institute had detected others 4 dead bottlenose dolphins which had been put to death in a similar manner.
Both in the previous weeks and during the same period when the bottlenose dolphins were killed in 2023, there was activity in the international waters of the region by large longline fishing groups that fish with circular nets and do not fly the Greek flag.
Given the concern both for this specific incident of willful killing and for others that may arise, the Archipelagos Institute vessel remains in the open sea in the area recording any fishing activity that could be related to these incidents.
