On July 7, the new mandatory safety systems of the GSR2 come into effect, so from this date onwards, all cars that will be imported, according to the new European Regulation, will have to be equipped with specific safety systems.

The new safety systems – which correct driver errors and significantly reduce the chances of an accident – include:

  • the emergency signal (ESS),
  • the Alcohol Interlock (ALC),
  • the warning for driver drowsiness and attention (DDR-AW),
  • in the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS),
  • the Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA),
  • the reversing detection system (REV),
  • the pedestrian and bicycle collision warning (PCW) and
  • the blind spot information system (BLIS).

The specific systems

Purchase and service prices will rise

The GSR2 introduces stricter requirements and advanced driver assistance systems, which until now have only been found in expensive and luxury models. This results in the cost of cars going up even more, while at the same time the cost of maintaining the vehicles will also increase.

But the profit for the EU will be huge, as they will reduce the accident rates on European roads and consequently the cost of insurance premiums.

The introduction of more safety systems is going to affect the prices of the basic versions, as they have frugal equipment. So many importers have already removed from their price lists the simple versions, which basically do not have the GSR2 systems. Market executives estimate that many importers will try to absorb some of the price increase in order to remain competitive, while some others will inevitably raise prices.
