What may have caused the global “digital blackout” – “The systems did not go down due to a cyber attack”, says an expert to the Guardian
“In Greece, the problems are very isolated,” the Minister of Digital Governance told SKAI 100.3 Dimitris Papastergiou about the “digital black out” that has caused heaps of problems worldwide.
As he clarified, in our country the upgrade of the software in question would be done later, and therefore the systems were largely unaffected. As for ordinary Windows users, the minister clarified that the security software is used by large enterprises, and therefore it will not affect them.
Mr. Papastergiou spoke of a problem in a security update that threw the system into an “endless loop”.
For his part, cyber security expert Dan Card told the Guardian that citizens “need to remain calm” while businesses deal with the global technical failure that has “brought down” systems and is causing a host of problems.
The major breach may have been caused by a “bug in a routine security update” it also said.
“Looks like a bug in a regular security update, rather than any form of “cyber hyperattack”, but it still poses global challenges, and is likely to require a large number of people to take remedial action.
“Companies should make sure their IT teams are well supported as it could be a difficult and very stressful weekend for them as they help their customers” he noted.
The spate of IT network problems appears to be linked to cyber security firm Crowdstrike on Microsoft servers.
I do not think that this incident is related to the attack on the land register, and for the attack there is no cause for concern, a protocol is being followed for the gradual reset of the entire system, the process is ongoing, we will have official information from the relevant ministry, he explained to SKAI and the Misfits the government representative Pavlos Marinakis.
