The fire that broke out in the Kantanos area, southwest of Chania, is now in remission and without an active front. Shortly before 7 pm a new message was sent by 112 for the citizens in the Maza and Pappadiana areas of Chania to move towards Temenia.

According to the fire department, what causes concern are the scattered outbreaks in the southern part.

“This is an impassable area in which winds blow that create fire vortices and new outbreaks,” the mayor of Kantanou-Selinou, Antonis Perrakakis, said on SKAI 100.3 radio.

Mr. Perrakakis emphasized that some damage has already been caused to the yards of houses. He added that at the moment, there are 3 fronts in a kilometer line of 10 km. The problem, however, as he mentioned, is that the mountains are difficult and inaccessible and the only substantial help can be provided by the 4 helicopters operating in the area, despite strong ground forces forces are lined up on the fronts of the fire.

Mr. Perrakakis pointed out that the picture of the fire at this time is alarming.

According to the mayor of Chania, Panagiotis Simandarakis, the fire brigade is currently concentrating in the area of Kantanou as strong winds are blowing in the area.

He spoke of a sparsely populated area, while for the Agriles and Livada areas of Chania where earlier today there were 112 for evacuation, the danger has been averted.

To extinguish the fire, the firefighting forces were reinforced and 130 firefighters, 7 groups of pedestrians, 35 vehicles, 4 aircraft and 5 helicopters are working. At the same time, there is assistance from OTA project water carriers and machinery

It is recalled that earlier, the villages of Agriles and Livada in the wider area of Rodovani before Sougia, were evacuated following a message from 112.
