New life began to sprout again at its bottom Porto Koufo, in Halkidiki, after the underwater cleaning where tons of garbage were removed! In front of the encouraging image for the marine ecosystem, divers of the environmental organization came Greek Eco Projectwho in last year’s cleaning, brought 7 tons of garbage to the surface.
“This year, we “dusted” the seabed since it was in better condition than the accumulated garbage of years that we had taken out last year and we found that new species have already started to grow,” the founder and president of the Greek Eco Project told APE-MPE Avgi Metaxas.
It is noted that the cleaning was done in its context Blue Halkidiki 2024, one of the largest initiatives of the Greek Eco Project for clean seas and coasts in the region of Halkidiki. Specifically, more than 320 kilograms of garbage were removed from the shores in Nea Triglia, Nea Playa, Kallikrateia, Vatopedi, Kelyfos Island and the port of Porto Koufos, while on the last day, following the four-day underwater cleaning, 8 mega bags of garbage with more than 2 tons of garbage.
“Indeed, in order to save the sea creatures, in a separate operation, we removed from the seabed in Porto Koufo a huge net that had been trapping sea animals for a long time. In essence, these are abandoned fishing nets, and this particular one, half a kilometer long, trapped many animals,” explained Mrs. Metaxas.
More generally, during the four days of coastal and underwater cleanups, the volunteers removed fishing gear, styrofoam, foam rubber, torpedoes, window blinds, car tires, balloons, cigarettes, cartridges and much more…
