Incalculable damage – mainly to crops and olive groves – has been caused by fire which broke out on Wednesday, in the Municipality of Amari at Rethymnon and flared up yesterday Thursday, threatening houses and settlements.
In the last 24 hours they were evacuated in total, through it 1129 villages, while almost the entire fire brigade of Crete has been mobilized
According to an update from the Fire Department, at this time there is no single active front, but scattered outbreaks that are being dealt with by the infantry units.
At the first light of the day, 4 aircraft and 4 helicopters took off to make water drops, while the operational planning foresees that in the next hours another 3 aircraft will fly to the area.
“All those who have suffered damage will be supported in the best possible way”, explained Minister Vassilis Kikilias
“We must all work together so that we don’t find ourselves in a difficult position if the winds and the Beaufort rain again,” the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vasilis Kikilias said in the evening from Rethymnon.
“No one is going to leave here if we don’t do our job first,” added Mr. Kikilias, pointing out that more than 250 people are working to extinguish the fire.
Asked about the issue of compensations, the minister stated that he is already on the open line with Mr. Triandopoulos who also has the responsibility.
“All the people who have suffered damage will be supported in the best possible way, but at the moment it is important to bring a result to the front of the fire,” he stressed.
It is noted that the villages that were ordered to be evacuated are Agia Paraskevi, Platanos, Apodoulou, Vathiako, Lochria, Adrachtos, Rizikas, Satta and Chordaki.
