The flames in Varnava are over 25 meters high, said the press representative of the Fire Brigade, fire chief Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, in an emergency briefing
Forty (40) agroforestry fires broke out in the last 24 hours, of which 33 were dealt with directly at their initial stage, while the fire brigade continues to deal with 7 fires, in an extremely difficult day as the Fire Department’s press representative, fire chief Vassilis, pointed out a while ago Vathrakogiannis, during an emergency briefing.
According to Mr. Vathrakogiannis, an inter-ministerial coordination meeting convened by the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, was completed a short time ago, with the participation of all co-competent agencies for their optimal coordination, regarding the ongoing fires.
He then referred to the fire that broke out at 2:32 this afternoon in the Aigirousses Megaron, pointing out that it has been contained while adding that ground and aerial firefighting forces continue to work until it is completely extinguished.
Regarding the large fire that broke out half an hour later, specifically at 3:20 in the afternoon, in Varnava Attica, near scattered houses and at a close distance from the settlement, the Fire Department’s press representative emphasized that when it started, the gusts of winds reached 8 Beaufort, with the result that in a few minutes it took on very large dimensions.
At the same time, he reminded that 4 messages were issued by 112. One for information and 3 more messages for the removal of residents from the settlements of Varnava, Monastiri Panagias, Vothonas – Kalentzi and Purithi.
“At the moment the fire is progressing towards the Marathon lake with the forces that are constantly being reinforced, concentrating laterally, facing flames that in many cases even exceed 25 meters” he noted.
250 firefighters with 10 forest commando teams and 67 vehicles as well as a large number of volunteers are working to extinguish the fire. From the air, 19 air vehicles, 12 aircraft and 7 helicopters, of which 1 for their coordination, operate periodically. Project machinery and water carriers of the Attica Region and the Armed Forces provide assistance in the extinguishing work.
All forces are coordinated by the “OLYMPOS” Mobile Operations Center.
“We appeal to the residents of the area. For their own safety and given that the fire is developing rapidly, they should necessarily follow the instructions of the authorities” concluded Mr. Vathrakogiannis.
