Drowning of 8-year-old girl: The swimming pools of the camp did not meet the specifications
The Municipality of Kassandra proceeded today, following a unanimous decision of the municipal committee, to revoke the operating licenses of the swimming pools inside the camp where the 8-year-old was found dead.
According to the ministerial decision of 2016 that sets the criteria for the operating license of the camps, it is defined that the pool, i.e. the swimming tank, must be “in a demarcated area safe for children properly fenced with a fixed fence of 1.20 m for to ensure its use with the supervision of the personnel required for its operation (lifeguards)”.
The Municipality of Kassandra issued an operating license to the two swimming pools of the camp in August 2022.
As reported by Kathimerini, in the convening of an extraordinary meeting held today, he revoked the licenses as it turned out that the data on the basis of which the license was issued had been modified. Specifically, during the meeting, it was reported that after an on-site inspection at the camp, it emerged that in a swimming pool “a part of the fencing of the swimming pool does not exist as provided for in a demarcated area safe for children properly fenced […] as there were points from which it was possible for children to access the swimming pool.”
Regarding the second pool, the inspection revealed that “the required life jackets (2) and (1) pole were not present, and there are no depth markings”.
At the same time, it appears that the person who was appointed by the company to be responsible for the compliance of the operation of the two swimming pools with the applicable health – hydrological, tourist – police and other provisions with the operation of the swimming pools, has not been hired during year 2024 by the owning company and no other person in charge has been appointed.
