The government is drawing up a special plan for fire protection and restoration of the forests and streams of Attica, so that a fire does not overspread the urban fabric, as the Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis, said on SKAI 100.3 radio.

He explained that streams have been shown to work as hypertransmitters of fire both outside the urban fabric – ravines and streams – and into the urban fabric.

As Mr. Skylakakis mentioned, in the framework of the forest reform there are now studies for all the forests of Attica and forestry cooperatives are entering together with private companies, in the forests, with tenders, from the end of the year, beginning of the next, to be dilutions and clean-ups, in the context of a management plan on a permanent basis.

He emphasized that for many decades, over 5-6 decades, the forests of Greece and Attica have been without any management and have accumulated huge amounts of fuel.

Regarding the fire in Attica, he characterized it as one of the most difficult, not in terms of destructiveness, but in terms of speed due to winds.

He also mentioned that a special program “greening my garden – greening Penteli” is being planned for the immediate cleaning and regeneration of private gardens that have been burned, in collaboration with the forestry services.
