A doctor was attacked by a psychiatric patient at the Psychiatric Clinic of the General Hospital of Chania, according to relevant information from the medical and nursing staff of the Psychiatric Clinic of the General Hospital of Chania. The incident concerns the exercise of physical harm, specifically to the director of the clinic, Goulielmo Georgios, when he was attacked by a stimulating patient of the clinic.

In particular, the patient immobilized the doctor and tried to strangle him. The incident was fortunately averted after the intervention of a specialist psychiatrist, who happened to be on site, and, in a second year, the only male nurse on duty. In addition, the police had to assist in safely restraining the patient.

As confirmed by the commander of the GNH Giorgos Beas speaking to APE MPE “… the incident happened, the necessary measures were taken while immediately two male nurses who are coming as permanent staff to the Hospital from the relevant notice will staff the Psychiatric Department”.

According to the announcement of the staff of the Psychiatric Clinic:

Similar incidents have occurred in the recent past (last two months ago) as a result of the unfavorable operating conditions of the clinic in the last year. As is already known, the clinic operates with a single specialist psychiatrist, the director of the clinic, who is responsible for both the administrative and the therapeutic aspects. A clinic that normally operates with 7 permanent staff and at the present stage one alone is called upon to manage the multitude of cases that arrive, with what this entails in terms of the effectiveness of his work».

Mr. Beas also stated to APE-MPE that “We have announced 7 permanent positions for doctors for the psychiatric department, all of them turned out to be unfilled, with the last two concerning March 2024. At the same time, we also announced five positions for child psychiatrists, which also turned out to be unfilled ». In the meantime, 52 nurses occupy permanent positions at the Chania hospital, which, as the governor explained: “Eight D.E., 42 T.E. and two P.E. Of which the two men will undertake duty at the psychiatric clinic. Out of the 52 permanent 24 are already working as assistants and will occupy a permanent position”.

The workers also complain about the lack of security personnel “in a clinic that operates in constant overcrowding, putting the physical integrity of patients and workers at risk every day.” On this matter, Mr. Beas told APE-MPE that “… the administration committed to a meeting with the union and the doctors and workers of the PKKH and a relevant decision will be made at the next board of directors for guarding by a private company on a 24-hour basis of areas of psychiatry. The procedures have been initiated and this planning will be completed immediately.”
