The Ecumenical Patriarch, in his brief greeting, warmly thanked the Regional Patriarch for the invitation.
On Friday, September 6, Panagiotatos visited the headquarters of the Regional Unit of Chios, where he received a warm welcome from the Regional Governor of North Aegean and the Regional Councilors.
The Regional Governor Konstantinos Moutzouris described the presence of the Patriarch as a special honor for the Region and symbolically offered him an Archpriest’s cup to receive reciprocating symbolic souvenirs of the historic visit.
In his opposition, the Patriarch thanked the Regional Bishop and his colleagues for the honorable reception and, among other things, emphasized:
“Aegean-Pelagitian Chion, we particularly love as an Aegean-Pelagitian and an islander, who saw the light of the sun in the beautiful Imbron. For us, the sea breeze and the endless blue of the Aegean are an invaluable element of existence. However, it is not only the nature that makes up the uniqueness of the Aegean, but also its cultural history. Here the ecumenical values were born, which made it the axis of world culture.”
In the afternoon of the same day, a “Day on Climate Change” was held with the participation of distinguished speakers from Greece and abroad in a packed room of the Pearl Island Chios hotel.
After the introductory greeting and welcome of Constantinos Mouzouris, the speeches of the distinguished guest speakers followed:
- Speech of the President “TOGETHER WE CAN”, Ioannis Spanoliou, who referred to his childhood in Chios and the very different attitude of society at that time in everyday matters related to the environment as well as the current need to mobilize everyone to protect society from the effects of the Climate Crisis

- Speech of Emeritus Professor E.M.P. Vice President of the Technical Chamber of Greece, Tonia Moropoulouwho spoke about the creation of a pilot program for the sustainable development of Chios with the support of agencies and the local community, investing in an endogenous development.
- Speech of the journalist, expert in maritime matters, member of the Board of Directors. Chios Nautical Club, Ioannis Faraklas who conveyed the greeting of Dimitris Monioudis, President of the Society of Greek Engineers of Britain and Director of Environmental Affairs of the INTERCARGO organization and highlighted the efforts of Global Merchant Shipping to protect the Environment whose burden is less than 3% of emitted pollutants .
- Speech by Paralympian, Director of Sustainability at the World Sailing, Alexandra Rickham which emphasized that sport can undertake environmental initiatives and emerge as a potential helper for sustainable development as long as it is asked.
- Speech of the President of the Academy of Athens Stop Krimize. Among other things, he referred to the image of space and the historical course of planet Earth. He emphasized how important a role the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will play in the sustainability of the planet and how this is connected to the temperature of the Earth. He referred to the orbit and axis of the Earth, their changes and how they affect the water level, the manifestation of natural phenomena and all the parameters and measurements of the climate, while he connected in a unique and masterful way music and art with the concept of the climate and the environment.
The former President of the Republic, Academic and Honorary Professor of the School of Law of EKPA, Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos delivered a speech at the conference on “Climate Change” on Friday, September 6 in Chios as part of the 3rd Chios Festival, which we have attached.
The main speaker of the conference was A.Th. Panagiotis o Ecumenical Patriarch Mr. Bartholomew who with his enlightened speech referred to the multidimensional ecological initiatives and actions of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which he developed during the last four decades.
And he emphasized: “The protection of the natural environment is a consequence and extension of everything in the Church, whose entire life has an ecological texture and reference. Church life is “applied ecology”, while at another point in his speech, Panagiotatos noted that he will continue his efforts to protect the environment, especially to raise awareness among the new generation.

During the dinner, the Deputy Governor of Culture and lead singer, Michalis Dessos sang Polychronism in honor of the A.Th.P. of the Ecumenical Patriarch while the famous high-pitched Christina Poulitsis he won the admiration of his peers by singing a well-known aria dedicated to His Holiness.
