A tornado removed the fencing of the Chios Customs – The mastic producers had managed to collect only 20% of this year’s production
The heavy rain and storms that accompanied the passage of the bad weather “Atena” from Chios in the early hours of Wednesday morning, resulted in severe flooding especially in the center of the city, where the problems were more intense.
According to politischios.gr, the fire department intervened in a total of more than 50 incidents since the volume of water was such that even cafe chairs from Aplotaria almost ended up on the waterfront.
The biggest problem in the center of the city was found in Aplotaria, Venizelou, Rodokanaki as well as Michail Livanou, where the transported materials blocked the streets and had the result of blocking the grates and rainwater drains, while in Agios Apostolos the parking lot was flooded.
At the same time, significant problems occurred in the DEDDIE network as well as in Municipal Lighting.
A tornado took down the fencing of the Chios Customs
Even the solid fencing of the Customs House was not able to withstand the severe weather phenomena of the “Atena” storm that swept Chios in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Typical are the images from the area of the North Limenobrachion where, according to testimonies, a tornado “took off” the new fencing of the Chios Customs, causing, among other things, significant damage.
Images of complete devastation in South Chios: Over 160 tons lost due to the passage of the bad weather “Atena” – The mastic producers had managed to harvest only 20% of this year’s production
A picture of an almost complete destruction of this year’s mastic production, the president of the Mastic Producers Union of Chios Giorgos Toumpos described through his statements to “P”, emphasizing that almost 80% of the production had not yet been collected before the disastrous passage of the bad weather.
In particular, he said that the mastic producers had managed to collect only 20% of this year’s production, while the remaining 80% of the mastic production was still under the trees, exposed to natural phenomena. The intensity and extent of the disaster have caused great concern, with the blow being particularly serious, since mastic is the main pillar of the region’s economy and a unique product of worldwide recognition.
The president of the Union noted that the disaster has greatly affected the geographical part of Mastichohoria, without there being an area that has not been damaged. Despite the preparation for the adverse weather conditions, the severity of the bad weather exceeded all predictions, causing huge problems for the crops.
The Union has already carried out on-site autopsies to assess the extent of the damage, while a more complete picture is expected in the coming days. The president specifically mentioned that the mastic has been damaged to a significant extent, while the priority at the moment is to try to support the producers both financially and psychologically, so that they can continue harvesting this year’s production, as long as this is possible.
Another problem faced by the Chewing Gum Growers Association is the sufficiency of available production to meet the orders placed, especially for the second half of the season. The bad weather has left the available quantity of product at particularly low levels, creating uncertainty about the Union’s ability to meet market demand.
