The Ministry of Citizen Protection has announced an amendment to the legal framework regarding the process of issuing new identity cards
The Ministry of Citizen Protection is proceeding with amendments to the legal framework for the process of issuing new police identification cards.
These actions come after the fine imposed on YPROPO by the Personal Data Protection Authority, for problems identified after an ex officio investigation regarding informing citizens about their personal data.
The relevant announcement of the ministry in detail:
“The Ministry of Citizen Protection and the Greek Police attach particular importance to the decisions of independent authorities, such as the Personal Data Protection Authority, with the aim of continuously improving procedures and strengthening the protection of citizens’ personal data.
Therefore, actions have already been initiated to amend the legal framework regarding the process of issuing new police identity cards, in accordance with the recently issued relevant decision of the Authority and for full compliance with its instructions and in particular for:
a) the application of the principle of minimization in relation to the storage of personal data and
b) the updating of the relevant information material for citizens on the website of the Hellenic Police.
These actions will be completed within six (6) months. It is pointed out that the validity of the already issued identity cards remains unchanged, as well as that the process of issuing them, until the completion of the above actions, continues normally.
