With the arrivals of refugees and immigrants in Southern Crete, Gavdos and the Dodecanese becoming a daily occurrence, the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum is planning the creation of small structures in Rhodes and Crete.

According to TA NEA, the plan includes small structures for short-term accommodation in Chania, Rethymno and Rhodes, in order to transfer refugees and immigrants arriving in the south of the country until the completion of the identification procedures.

These reception and identification centers will have a capacity of approximately 300 people and a time limit of 48 hours.

Currently, the ministry is in the research phase of possible sites where the structures could be set up, such as inactive camps and former military installations, or other sites that municipalities can indicate.

It is recalled that the scenario for the creation of these structures on the two islands had begun to be discussed before the summer, when the flows to the south of the country had exploded. It is worth noting that the arrivals in Crete and Gavdos since the beginning of the year have exceeded 3,500, when in all of 2023 it was only 780.
