Bad weather “Filippos”: Polar temperatures and frost from Wednesday – The instructions of the Civil Protection

According to the Extraordinary Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena issued today, Tuesday 08 March 2022 by the National Meteorological Service (EMY), cold gas masses from northern Europe will move south and affect the country with bad weather named “Philip” “Filippos”).

The bad weather will have the main characteristics of the very low temperatures for the season, the strong frost in places and the heavy and occasional heavy snowfalls and according to the first estimates it will be maintained until Sunday (13-03-2022).

More detail:

A. From the first hours of Wednesday (09-03-2022) snowfall will occur in the mountains and semi-mountains of the mainland and in the lowlands of Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace. Gradually the snowfall will extend to areas of Thessaly and central Sterea with low altitude as well as in the mountains of Crete. The night will snow in the Sporades, Evia and the islands of the northern Aegean.

B. On Thursday (10-03-2022) the snowfall will affect the mountains and semi-mountains of the mainland, the Aegean and Crete islands, the lowland areas of Thessaly, the eastern mainland and the eastern Peloponnese and until the afternoon the lowlands regions of central and eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

C. On Friday (11-03-2022) and on the weekend (12 and 13-03-2022) the snowfall will continue in the mountainous – semi-mountainous as well as in low altitude areas in the eastern mainland and Evia, the Sporades, the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean, the Cyclades and Crete.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection (www.civilprotection.gr) of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection, has informed the competent state services involved, as well as the regions and municipalities of the country, in order to be on increased alert for civil protection, in order to deal immediately with the effects of severe weather.

At the same time, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection advises citizens to be especially careful, taking care of self-protection measures against the dangers arising from the occurrence of severe weather phenomena.

In particular, in areas where snow and frost are forecast:

If you are going to travel by car:

  • To be informed about the weather and the condition of the road network
  • Have anti-skid chains in their vehicle and the tank full of fuel
  • To travel, if necessary, preferably during the day, preferring the main roads
  • To inform their relatives about the route they are going to follow
  • Change their travel schedule to avoid the onslaught of the weather
  • To faithfully follow the instructions of the locally competent bodies, such as Traffic, etc.

If moving on foot:

  • Wear with multiple layers of light clothing instead of heavy clothing and wear appropriate footwear to avoid injuries due to slipperiness
  • Avoid unnecessary movements during peak phenomena (heavy snowfall, frost conditions)
