As the family does not have a surname, they can choose whatever they want – Relatives in 2004 had chosen De Gres for example
Ten members in total former royal family they submitted an application for Greek citizenship today, Thursday. These are the five children of the former king Constantine, three the children of Pavlos and two the children of Alexia.
As Athanasios Balerbas, Secretary General of the Ministry of the Interior, explains to SKAI and “The Misfits”, the procedure is as follows:
“The application is submitted by any member of the former royal family who wishes to do so, declares that he recognizes the state, declares that he has no claim due to the previous state and, most importantly, chooses a surname and declares the other information to make their demographic recording”.
“This process was done by a relative of theirs in 2004. The former Prince Michael of Greece had gone in 2004 by proxy, he and his daughters had submitted the required declarations and he had taken the surname De Grace“, reminds Mr. Balerbas.
Then, he states that once the required declarations are submitted, “then they go to minister of interiorwhich finds that the provisions of Law 2215 of 94 are fulfilled and the registrations are finalized. All Greek citizens, as soon as we finalize our registration in the population register, we can then go to issue our certificate documents. Identity, passport, etc. are activated all the rights and the resulting obligations for all Greek citizens”.
Regarding the surname of the former royal family, the General Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs says that he does not know who they will choose and explains: “This is a historical case as this family does not have a surname. Since he does not have, anyone can specify any surname they want».
However, as he notes, “the documents cannot state status as a former royal family as, based on the Constitution, there are neither titles of nobility, nor attributes from a previous state status. In 1994, when their travel documents were taken away from the Greek Republic, it was precisely because the state no longer accepted the designation of former king”.
