Separately, for the first time in 10 years, the elderly bears of Nymphaeus fell into hibernation. They had been “sticky” since 2015, when they were transferred from the Thessaloniki Zoo to the ARKTOUROS Conservation Center.

The 32-year-old Sasha and Alexandra, who were inseparable even during their walks and fell into hibernation together, slept separately for the first time this year.

As ARKTOURS’ communication manager, Panos Stefanou, told the Athenian/Macedonian News Agency, the two “grandmothers” had slept together since the first winter they had been transferred to Nymphaeum and had been sleeping together ever since. “But this year, that changed and they slept separately. However, many bears change habits, sometimes sleeping in artificial nests and other times making their own,” explains Mr. Stefanou, adding that the 20 bears of the Protection Center in Nymphaeus went into hibernation a little earlier this year, due to weather conditions.

Most of the bears, such as Bradley, Cooper, Patrick and Masha, preferred the artificial nests prepared by their caretakers, while others, such as Sandy, Mira and the “grandmothers”, 32-year-old Tasula and 37-year-old Katerina, they chose natural nests.

The ARKTOUROS Protection Center in Nymphaeum will remain closed until March.
