Two colored racing stripes represent the 1964 Mustang’s iconic Tribar logo and pay homage to its racing heritage
In 1962, a small team wanted to turn a compact sedan into a sports car, which they named the Mustang. In its very first race it managed to defeat its strongest European competitors and continued unbeaten in the following years to become the first car of an American manufacturer to complete a lap of the iconic Nürburgring in Germany in under 7 minutes. To honor these achievements and more, Ford today introduces the new Mustang GTD Spirit of America.
The Mustang is an original American car from 1965 drawing power from its V8 engine, as well as the iconic galloping horse logo that adorns the famous red, white and blue badge. The new Mustang GTD Spirit of America not only represents Ford Mustang’s performance heritage, but also honors the American spirit of ingenuity and courage in the face of challenges.
That spirit also inspired Craig Breedlove, a structural engineer, who bought a jet engine from a Korean War fighter plane for $500 and became the first person to exceed the 500- and 600-mile mark. /hour on land.
Craig Breedlove’s record-breaking efforts in a sport dominated mostly by European aristocrats and playboys inspired generations of American designers, engineers and inventors, including the men and women of the Mustang GTD development program.
“The Mustang GTD epitomizes Mustang performance. Mustang GTD Spirit of America honors the boldness behind this performance,” said Jim Owens, Mustang GTD Brand Manager. “Mustang GTD wouldn’t have happened without people like Craig Breedlove, who push the boundaries by taking on the Goliaths of every era in an American way.”
To highlight the Mustang GTD Spirit of America, Ford Design has created a body in Performance White, which is decorated by two racing stripes in Race Red and Lightning Blue colors – inspired by the iconic red, white and blue Tribar of the Mustang that made debuted in 1964. These stripes run along the body of the Mustang GTD Spirit of America. The design also references the suit worn by Craig Breedlove when he broke the 500 and 600mph speed records in the 1960s.
Bare carbon is a primary component of the Mustang GTD Spirit of America’s aerodynamic components, including the front splitter, air diffuser and rear spoiler. This one features end-plates painted in Race Red and a ‘MUSTANG’ logo on the underside, ensuring that cars following will have no doubt what just passed in front of them. All owners can choose between mirror caps in Race Red or bare carbon. At the same time, the brake calipers are painted Race Red as standard. Additionally, the Mustang GTD Performance Package is offered as standard equipment.
The Mustang GTD Spirit of America offers special edition seats that further highlight the unique interior. These are lined with leather and Dinamica inserts. Black Onyx stands out, with a color-graded Race Red stripe down the center and Re-Entry White trim on the outside, while Victory Blue contrast stitching adds a subtle touch. The Victory Blue color is also used as a contrasting element throughout the vehicle’s cabin. The paddles behind the steering wheel, the rotary shifter and the badge are made by 3D printing from titanium.
The new 2025 Mustang GTD, like the new Mustang GTD Spirit of America, represents the pinnacle of evolution in Mustang model history, setting new performance standards with 826 PS of power, 900 Nm of peak torque and a top speed of 325 km/h – the highest ever achieved by any road-going Mustang.
