For the first time Russian environmentalists confirm the enormous ecological disaster caused in Crimea after 2 tanker sinking into the straits of Kerch (the point where the Black Sea with the Azov Sea is united) about a month ago.

Satellite photos show that the oil spill now extends to 25 kilometers, both in the Black Sea and the Azov Sea, and is more visible from space.

Satellite images examined by the BBC Verify on January 10 – the latest high -resolution photos available – showed a huge oil spill running through the narrow, at least 25 kilometers long (15 miles). A second, smaller blot of about 5.7 kilometers (3.5 miles) is also visible.

Victor Danilov, head of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), described the oil leak the worst “environmental disaster” of the country in the 21st century.

Up to 5,000 tonnes of oil have now been leaked to the sea and Russian workshops are working nightly to clean the coasts from the fuel on both sides of the Gulf of Crimea.

In a statement to the BBC Verify, a Greenpeace spokesman estimated that oil from the leak covers a total area of up to 400 square kilometers.

According to Danilov, the oil spill could “reach Odessa by the end of January” in southern Ukraine. Indeed, it “cannot be ruled out” that it will travel to the coasts of Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.
