His deep sadness over the loss of distinguished archaeologist and peer professor of classical archeology, John Akamatisexpresses in his resolution by the Department of History and Archeology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
John M. Akamatis, born in 1949 at Paleopolis Samothrakis. He studied at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, graduating in 1973, and continued his postgraduate studies at the Institute of Fine Arts at the University of New York. His academic career at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki began in 1981 as a scientific associate in the Student of Archeology and Art History. In 1986 he was awarded a Doctor of Excellent and joined the regular teaching staff of the Department of History and Archeology, where he worked until his retirement in 2016.
As highlighted in the Department’s resolution, his teaching work covered a wide range of subjects and courses at an undergraduate and postgraduate level. His main research work focused on Pella market. Under its direction, the excavation evolved into a numerous student training center from Greece and abroad as well as a significant field of scientific studies.
Ioannis Akamatis contributed decisively to the maintenance and promotion of the archaeological site of Pella. International recognition of his work is reflected in invitations for teaching and lectures at top university institutions, including Oxford Universities, Stanford and Berkeley. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Teloglion Foundation, a member of the Athens Archaeological Society and Local Councils of Monuments. His rich authoring work includes monographs and scientific articles focusing on topography, architecture and pottery in Macedonia, while contributing substantially to the dissemination of archaeological knowledge to the general public.
Honoring his offer and memory, the Department of History and Archeology decided:
-To expressly condolences to his family
-To deposit in memory of money in a public interest institution
-Do post this resolution on the website of the Department of History and Archeology
Teloglio also issued a resolution, which points out, inter alia, that the deceased, with its effective presence on the Board of Directors, from 2014 to 2016, contributed substantially to the work of the Foundation.
