For four consecutive days, a group young volunteer And scientists fought a moving “battle of life” on the beach of Gavathas of Antissa, in northwestern Lesvos, attempting to rescue a small dolphin found in the shallow. From the morning of Tuesday, August 5, until Friday, August 8th, the attempt was made to gather hope, humanity and solidarity, despite the tragic end: the dolphin, which rescuers called Orpheus, failed to survive.

The story of Orpheus rekindled the ancient mythological past of the area, with the myth wanting the head of the homonymous legendary musician to be washed on the same coast. Today, little Orpheus was the occasion to set up a contemporary ‘Laboratory of Humanity’in a difficult time for both humans and environment.

Coordinated Rescue Business in Lesvos

The Research Center for Rescue and Care of Cetodes “ARION” It was immediately mobilized after a notification of bathers for a live dolphin who was difficult to swim in shallow water. Quickly, the animal strangled on the shore, with the incident involving a young male zonat (Stenella Coeruleoalba), species that rarely occurs so close to land unless it has serious health problems.

The coordination of care and rescue was undertaken by scientists Elena Akritopoulou (maritime biologist, University of Thessaly) and Eurydice Kontemeniotou (Veterinarian, AUTH), with the support of trained local rescue groups. The business participated in Scouting Group of Wildlife of Lesvos Wildlifemytilene and Mithimna Scouting Systems, the Hellenicher volunteers ANIMA and his Museum of Natural History of Petrified Forestas well as members of the local community, under the constant guidance of “ARION”.

Medical care and battle with time

The first clinical examination of the dolphin was conducted on the spot, under the guidance of veterinarians and researchers of the “Volunteer Veterinary Network” and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The detailed hematological and biochemical test was found severe dehydration; immunosuppression and heavy neurological symptomsprobably viral etiology. Supporting and medication was given, with Nikita Vogiatzis, a specialized environmentalist, providing an intensive 24 -hour care.

Despite the titanic effort that made four whole nights, the dolphin failed. A necropsy and sampling followed by specialized scientists, which demonstrated an insult of Morbilli virus – Known for causing deadly neurological problems in cetaceans. Samples were sent to the AUTH for further analyzes.

Participation of Local Government and Volunteers

Throughout the business, the active presence of local government The Municipality of West Lesvos and the Fire Department has been key. Deputy Mayors, Associates, Local Authorities and Bodies responded immediately, supporting every need for this difficult mission. Both Sigri Port Station and other competent public services were informed.

The ARION Research Center warmly thanked all those who contributed to the business: Volunteers, Scientists, Scout Groups, Local Associations, Bodies, the Kalloni Health Center, businessmen and ordinary citizens who participated and offered with their hearts to this demanding treaty.
