KYSEA approved on Wednesday the purchase of another Belharra frigate from France as part of the modernization of the Armed Forces, according to Reuters, citing two government sources.

Reuters reports that Athens had agreed in 2021 to obtain new Belharra frigates worth about 3 billion euros, with the right to purchase an additional one to replace earlier ships serving in the Navy for more than 30 years.

“KYSEA approved the supply of a fourth Belharra frigate from France,” said a senior government official without giving further details, the news agency notes, while stressing that the market was confirmed by a second government source.

Defense Minister Nikos Dendias said earlier that the new frigate would carry ballistic missiles. The market is expected to be approved by the relevant Parliamentary Committee in the coming days.

As part of a ten-year equipment program of more than 25 billion euros, Greece is also planning the US F-35 fighter market, new submarines, unmanned air, marine and underwater systems, as well as an anti-aircraft “umbrella” called “Achilles”.
