In the context of intensifying the bio -security measures to tackle sheep and goats, decided by the government meeting held by the Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis, the leadership of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and a spokesman for the Ministry of Rural Development and Food. are adopted the proposals submitted by the Working Group for the management of the epizooty her sheep and goatswhich has been set up since the beginning of August.

The Working Group examined the situation that was shaped and formulated eight sentences to reinforce the mechanism for dealing with the disease.

Specifically, he proposes:

  1. Expanding the opening hours of disinfection stationsto serve more vehicles for transport of live animals, feed and milk, with the aim of reducing the microbial load. At the same time, it is proposed to examine the possibility of financial support for farmers for disinfection costs.
  2. Intensification of surveillance and policing measuresby accelerating sanctions procedures in cases of non -compliance or hiding cases. It is also proposed that the farmers who violate the measures and the referral of the relevant cases to the competent authorities and the Public Prosecutor’s Office can also be proposed in order to have a deterrent to any infringement.
  3. Creating a permanent readiness mechanism for prevention and timely diagnosis of infectious diseases. This mechanism will include: permanent surveillance of productive animals using drones, mechanism of immediate supply of materials and equipment, strengthening the veterinary staff of the Regions and the competent services.
  4. Immediate recording, photographing, commitment and appropriate health management Feeders in contaminated breeds, with the aim of avoiding further transmission of the virus.
  5. Post data on the evolution of epizootysuch as dates and number of outbreaks per regional unit. Complete transparency and timely information are necessary, both for the scientific community and for the alert and alertness of the productive world.
  6. Organizing a new information cycle For bio -safety measures, with priority in the areas affected by smallpox. These actions will be aimed at continuing the training of breeders and enhancing cooperation with local veterinary authorities.
  7. Establishment on the subject of substantiated investigation of the effectiveness of the EU, vaccines, level and duration of immunity, availability, as well as the economic impact of the possible implementation of a vaccine regimen over the current system of dealing and eradicating the disease.
  8. Immediate killing and destruction of infected flocksimmediately after receiving a positive laboratory effect, within 72 hours and at the latest within four days, in all regions. This measure is considered critical to limit the spread of the disease.

The Ministry of Rural Development and Food stresses that it is continuing its work with systematic monitoring of the evolution of Epizotis, in close cooperation with the Regions, Veterinary Agencies and producers’ representatives. The aim is to immediately activate all available mechanisms, to effectively implement the measures and to protect the country’s animal capital.
