A retired police officer was sentenced to 5 years in prison for – when he was still active – he covered a gang active in the smuggling of cigarettes on the market in the center of Thessaloniki.

The Three -Member Court of Appeals in Thessaloniki found guilty of the 55 -year -old – a police officer – a police officer, for smuggling and bribery, with the recognition of an earlier legitimate life, while eliminating him from gang and abuse. He decided to convert the sentence to 5 euros a day, which he suspended his execution in view of the Court of Appeal.

For the same case, which concerns the period 2017-18, they were sentenced to 5.5 years in prison – with suspension of appeal – two sisters who, according to the court ruling, led the gang. The same sentence was sentenced to two other people involved in smuggling, while three defendants were acquitted.

The involvement of the 55 -year -old police officer, who appears to have served in the Republic Square Security Department, came from telephone surveillance. As a police officer testified in the trial, the 55 -year -old defendant informed the gang executives in view of forthcoming checks by facilitating the action of the criminal group.
