Dozens of farmers from all over Fthiotida were present at the Lamia Courts today, Wednesday, in order to stand by their seven colleagues who are accused of obstructing transportation in previous agricultural mobilizations and are being tried by the Single-member Criminal Court of Lamia.
From early in the morning, the farmers arrived in the center of Lamia, lining up their tractors and agricultural vehicles around the Courthouse, in a symbolic but powerful message.
With slogans and banners, they demanded the acquittal of their colleagues, while at the same time they brought back to the fore their constant requests for a reduction in production costs, fair prices for products and faster payment of compensations and subsidies.
“The struggle for survival is not criminalized,” the farmers said, emphasizing that “they will not tolerate people who fought for their bread and life in the countryside being dragged to court.” At the same time, labor unions and social organizations in the region expressed their support for the farmers, pointing out the need for joint action by all strata of the people against the policies that shrink income and living standards.
The farmers say they are determined to continue their struggle, warning that very soon they will be back on the streets if there is no substantial response from the state to their just demands.
Shortly before one in the afternoon, tractors and agricultural machinery left the center of Lamia, but farmers remained outside the courts to support their fellow defendants.
