Major problems in the city of Messolonghi were caused by yesterday’s bad weather which resulted in houses and shops being flooded while several roads are inaccessible as they have turned into rivers.

Yesterday, the Fire Department received several calls to pump water, while machines from both the municipality and the Region are constantly working to drain the water. At the same time, the reinforced forces of the Fire Department remain ready to provide assistance to citizens.

In a statement, the municipality of Messolonghi stated that “due to the heavy rainfall, several parts of the streets within the urban fabric of the city have been blocked by Traffic” and asks citizens to avoid unnecessary travel.

The floods “hit” the hospital as well

The severe bad weather that hit Messolonghi yesterday also “hit” the city’s hospital.

Water entered the interior of the building from the third floor, causing it to flow down to the lower levels, causing concern for staff and patients.

The inflow of water reportedly started from the roof which was damaged by the heavy rainfall. Maintenance crews were immediately mobilized to deal with the problem and re-seal the roof to prevent further damage.

Also, a serious incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at Medium lengthwhen a municipal employee, who was involved in the relief operations, was attacked by a group of ten people while trying to repair damage and help stranded citizens.

According to the Municipality’s Deputy Mayor of Routine, Environment and Recycling MessolonghiChristos Vourvasis, the employee was “on the front line” of the effort, in the water, when he was brutally beaten by the perpetrators.

The man was immediately taken to the hospital, where he is being treated for injuries, while the authorities are investigating the causes of the attack and looking for those responsible for the incident. The incident has caused intense anger in the local community, as the worker was performing his duty under adverse conditions, trying to limit the consequences of the natural disaster that hit the area.
