The complaints of the Human Rights Observatory for the repatriation of immigrants are unfounded, the Ministries of Citizen Protection and Immigration & Asylum note in a joint announcement.
In response to the report of the Human Rights Observatory entitled “The use of immigrants from Greece as police assistants in pushbacks”, we feel obliged to express our serious concern and regret for the quality of the report.
As stated in their response: First because the organization adopts indiscriminately complaints based solely on the stitching of telephone interviews, which it does not confirm on the basis of credible and well-founded evidence.
Secondly any descriptions of aliens at the border, if they are correct and to what extent they are correct, rather betray conflicts and clearing accounts between the circuits of smugglers. Circuits that unfortunately continue to operate and exploit human suffering.
Tactics such as those described in the report do not correspond to the operational procedures of the Greek authorities and FRONTEX that fight the networks of smugglers every day and save human lives. We emphasize, however, that the enhanced presence in Evros has led to a significant reduction in illegal arrivals and a huge loss of revenue from criminal activities for traffickers. We call on all parties involved to refrain from providing support to these illegal activities.
Greece, as an EU member state, remains committed to the protection of human rights, applies the relevant national, EU and international law and investigates any reported incident and, in addition to regular judicial investigations, has independent oversight bodies, such as the National Transparency Authority, responsible for investigating allegations of arbitrary or arbitrary . We call on all those who report such abuses to provide the available evidence to the competent national authorities to be investigated.
