An integrated program, immediately feasible for the provision of social housing, economic but quality housing to vulnerable groups of the population in the capital, which will be funded by community funds, was submitted today by the mayor of Athens Costas Bakogiannis to the Minister of Labor, Kosti Hatzidaki during the meeting they had this morning at the Ministry of Labor.
Athens is facing its acute problem homelessness and the even greater risk of an outbreak of “young homelessness”, ie people who, due to the surge in rents and inflation, can no longer meet the cost of housing, which far exceeds the acceptable average in relation to income.
The proposal submitted by the mayor of Athens to Mr. Hatzidakis provides for immediate development of the “Estia” programwhich until now had eligible asylum seekers and ends at the end of the year, in a social housing program, with new categories of beneficiaries.
These include vulnerable groups of low-income population, such as the unemployed young people with an emphasis on the age group 15-29, young low-income families, the elderly and especially those who live alone and have a low income, but also low-income students. income that can not be accepted from the existing positions of the dormitories. From these groups, special emphasis will be given to the socially vulnerable.
In addition to the immediate beneficiaries, the program of the Municipality of Athens aims to maintain the balance of housing rents in the city that is threatened with violent overthrow due to the completion of the “Home” program for asylum seekers. It is estimated that after the end of the year more than 1,500 apartments will be left empty, with negative consequences for the city’s economy.
The proposal submitted by the mayor of Athens and met very positively, according to information, the Minister of Labor, includes specific financial tools (community resources) and as an implementing body is proposed EATA (Development and Tourism Promotion Company of the Municipality of Athens), which already In 2016, the “Estia” Program runs with the provision of integrated housing services in rented apartments and which to date has managed more than 400 apartments, offering a total of 8,000 housing units.
“The revitalization of the house in the center of Athens, by attracting young couples and students through the provision of financial housing is from the beginning our priorities. We are adapting our plan, under the weight of the great social need to support ‘here and now’ hundreds of our vulnerable fellow citizens.
We will use every ‘tool’ and all our forces to stand by them. The Municipality of Athens already operates a wide support network so that no one is left alone. “In the same studied and effective way, we will create the new safety net that Athens needs”, said Mr. Bakoyannis to APE after his meeting with the Minister of Labor.
