The outbreak of hepatitis in children in Britain and other countries, which according to the first indications could be due to an adenovirus, has caused global concern.
THE Ino Kanavaki pediatrician and pediatrician at Attikon Hospital spoke on SKAI TV and the show “Today” about all the latest data, the suspicious symptoms which should alarm the parents but also for the risk of needing a transplant.
Ms. Kanavaki stressed that all possibilities are still open, there is said to be an association with an adenovirus but it was not found in all the children who have been investigated. He did not rule out the possibility that hepatitis may be related to the coronavirus, as one hypothesis is that it may be due to the prolonged abstinence of children from other types of viruses and infections in the past.
Regarding the age of hepatitis cases, he stressed that in the United Kingdom they seem to concern children under 5 years old, however cases have been described in the whole range of childhood.
He explained that no one can know if it will be dangerous or not for the child, as unfortunately some cases go less well, need more intensive treatment and no one can predict it.
The pediatrician also stressed that if the condition goes away and the course of liver failure progresses, even more intensive treatment is required. Some children are successfully treated in hospitals, some need a transplant. Of the 170 cases described worldwide, 10% required a transplant.
In Greece, there is no technical transplantation and the children are treated abroad through special contracts, as Ms. Kanavaki said.
Regarding the mode of transmission, the pediatrician stressed that if the hypothesis is confirmed that it is due to adenovirus, it is transmitted through nasal secretions but also from the digestive system such as gastroenteritis.
He called on parents whose children show symptoms reminiscent of gastroenteritis not to send them to school for 48 hours and to refrain from social activities.
