An adventure, with a happy ending, he experienced a 4-year-old child in Volos, which was bitten by a spider belonging to the “black widow” species, the sting of which can be fatal. According to thenewspaper.gr, the child was playing carefree on the second day of Easter, on the lawn of a cafe in Portaria, Pelion, when he felt the sting. His parents immediately ran to him. The child’s hand had become red, hard, while it was in a lot of pain. They immediately contacted the Poison Center, from which they were informed about the bite of the “black widow”, while instructions were given for transporting the 4-year-old to the nearest hospital.
The child stayed for 24 hours in the hospital of Attica and was discharged while he is now in good health.
The “black widow” is not an exotic species. It is found in various parts of Greece and the Mediterranean in general, but its attacks, however, are not frequent. With its sting it could even lead to death in weaker organisms, whateverhow the elderly, vulnerable groups, young children and allergic people.
The poison of the “black widow” affects a number of organs and functions of the human body and that is why the antidote must be given very quickly.
In case we are alone, we limit the part of the body that has stung us. If, for example, it is the foot or the hand, we tighten the point so that the poison does not circulate in the body and then we thoroughly wash the wound. Alternatively – but this requires a relative organization – there are special suction cups that fit around the sting site and suck the venom to such an extent that they drastically reduce its effect. Providing medical care by qualified personnel, however, is definitely the safest solution.
