The municipality of Grevena finally canceled the horse auction in Grevena after a decision of its economic committee that met at noon. The relevant decision was submitted by the municipality of Grevena today to the administrative court of Kozani, where a request for suspension of execution and a temporary order to stop the auction of a total of 30 wild horses planned by the municipality of Grevena for May 3 was discussed. The appeal was filed by the Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation and the Panhellenic Association for the Protection of Equidae “Ippothesis».
According to lawyer Christina Zerva, who represented animal welfare associations, “the decision of the economic committee of the municipality of Grevena cancels the procedure, as it invokes the interest that exists from animal welfare associations for the adoption of horses». However, on Tuesday, May 3, the decision of the administrative court of Kozani is expected.
It is recalled that the wild horses were collected following a prosecutor’s order given after complaints from farmers about damage to crops. The animals were transported to a closed village field and with his decision the municipality of Grevena would proceed with an auction for 30 horses instead of 1500 euros in total.
However, the process was denounced by animal welfare organizations that proceeded to legal remedies by appealing to the administrative courts.
