The royal couple of Belgium was found today at the liquefied natural gas terminal – during the third day of his visit to Greece. King Philip and Queen Mathilde were given a tour at the Revythousa facilities by the Minister of Energy Costa Skrekathe managing director of DESFA, Maria Rita Galliand the CEO of Fluxys, Belgium, Pascal de Buc. During the meeting, the new data formed in the international energy markets after the outbreak of war in Ukraine were discussed.

“We took the Belgian royal couple on a tour of the gasification plant liquefied natural gas (LNG) of Revythousa“, which enables us to ensure the energy security of the country, even in the most unfavorable scenario of the total interruption of gas supply from Russia”, said Costas Skrekas during the visit which was followed by journalists from APE-MPE, ERT and Belgian media.

DESFA is preparing to increase the capacity of the Revythousa facilities, which is currently estimated at 7.2 billion cubic meters per year, by 12% -13%. The new floating tank is expected to be ready by the end of July to allow even more LNG loads to be stored.
“The LNG market is wide and the important thing is to secure LNG loads. “With the maximization of Revythousa, the TAP pipeline and of course the measure implemented by the government for the production of lignite and diesel, it makes the country more resilient than others,” said during the visit the CEO of DESFA, Maria Rita Galli.

The increase of the capacity of Revythousa by 150,000 cubic meters is expected to contribute to energy security and strengthen the country’s competitiveness.

“It is a very good facility in order to diversify the supply of the area. It allows Greece to have access to activated natural gas, worldwide. “It is therefore a very important facility in terms of security of security and diversification of supplies,” said Pascal de Buc, CEO of Fluxys, which is a shareholder of DESFA through the Senfluga consortium, during a cruise in Revythous.
The implementation of the critical projects of the LNG Terminal of Revythousa, with a budget of over 250 million euros, has been co-financed by funds of the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union through the Operational Program Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (EPAN) , in the context of the NSRF 2014-2020, NSRF 2007-2013 and the 3rd CSF 2000-2006 respectively.

DESFA has received over 67 million euros during these programs and is expected to receive about 20 million euros for the completion of the new infrastructure of the LNG Tanker Station and the New Pier (small scale LNG) and the Exhaust Compression Station ( Boil-off Gas Compressor Station). The officials point out that the Special Management Service of EPANEK of the Ministry of Development and Investment, closely monitors the progress of all co-financed projects of the LNG Terminal in a context of very good cooperation with the services of DESFA.
With the expansion of the Revythousa terminal, Greece will be able to address the markets of America, Qatar and the Middle East. The greater storage capacity gives DESFA the advantage of exports to neighboring countries such as Bulgaria. Revythousa is expected to serve as a hub for the Eastern Balkans as well as play an important role in securing the European Union’s energy supply. The cooperation with the Belgian Fluxys allows Greece to ensure significant know-how and prospects for cooperation in the field of strategic autonomy. Fluxys is actively involved in many projects, both in the gas sector (eg Senfluga, Trans Adriatic Pipeline) and in the transition to clean energy, such as green hydrogen production (the White Dragon project).

After visiting Rethymno, the royal couple and their delegation returned to Athens for a brief “meeting” with the Belgian press.

Afterwards, King Philip had lunch with Greek and Belgian executives in order to exchange views on the energy sector. Queen Mathilde attended a working lunch on sustainable development. These procedures complete the visit of the royal couple of Belgium to Athens.
